Vale Joan Notting. Joan was my Mum’s first cousin – Joan’s Mum, Alva, was my Grandad Cliff Scown’s sister.
As a young boy, I well remember Joan as someone whom I looked up to with a mixture of awe and admiration (figuratively and literally!), she being a police woman in a time when there weren’t that many around. Joan used to visit us regularly in Melbourne, where our family lived at the time (in Cheltenham and later Glen Waverley). Indeed, Joan boarded with us for a couple of months when she was doing her training at Corpus Christi Academy … or ‘Coppers’ Christi as everyone called it back then!
In every way, she was a trail-blazer and someone all women of today can look up to and admire.
Condolences to Joan’s family on behalf of my parents, Irene and Roy Jones, and my family, Gary, LIliana and Elysha Jones.

Sincere Condolences to Joans extended family and friends. It was my privilege to work with Joan and her staff at the Womens Police at Geelong when in the uniform branch and later as a detective at Geelong. On transferring to Altona North as a Sergeant I was very happy to see that she was the Officer in Charge of Laverton Police Station being the first female in charge of a police station in the history of Victoria Police. She then performed upgrading to Inspector before being promoted to that rank. She was an inspirational leader to everyone who worked with her and under her supervision when both Acting Inspector and Inspector.

An inspiration to many through your work in the police, but more importantly a matriarch of the Notting family. You’ll live on through the many, many nephews and nieces who look up to you as a person to aspire to be. Never forgotten. Rest In Peace Aunty Joan.
